Dust Collection Fan Duty
Selection and wear notes for fans on bag filters, cyclones and workshop extraction, dirty side and clean side.
The duty
Where the fan sits decides everything
The first question on a dust system is positional. A fan on the clean side of a bag filter sees filtered gas and can be an efficient backward curved wheel. The same airflow on the dirty side, upstream of the filter, sees the entire dust load and wants a radial or shrouded exhauster wheel with wear protection and a maintenance plan.
The second question is pressure. A bag filter loading up is a system curve that steepens, so the operating point walks down the fan curve. Size for the clean condition and the plant loses throughput as the media blinds; size for the design differential with margin and the fan is oversped on day one. We quote both states so the damper position is a decision rather than a surprise.
Typical wheels
Clean side: backward curved or backward inclined. Dirty side: backward inclined for a moderate load, radial blade or shrouded exhauster for a heavy or abrasive one.

Dust system data
- Airflow per hood and total, in CMH
- Design static pressure at the fan, not at the filter inlet
- Dust load in kg per hour and grams per cubic metre
- Particle size range and material name, so hardness can be judged
- Bulk density and moisture, which decide whether buildup occurs
- Gas temperature and dew point, because condensation is a different failure
- Whether the fan runs continuously or on an extraction timer
- Access for housekeeping, since a fan that cannot be cleaned gets bypassed
