Paint Booth and Spray Exhaust Duty
Overspray extraction duty: sticky loads, buildup, cleaning access, wheel choice and explosion-risk awareness.
The duty
Sticky, unbalanced and impossible to ignore
Spray exhaust is a filter duty with a maintenance twist. Overspray does not blow through the fan, it lands on it. A coated impeller loses balance progressively, which is why booth fans fail on bearings and vibration long before they fail on airflow. The selection therefore starts with access: wash-down provisions, inspection doors, a wheel that can be pulled without cutting the duct and a liner system that makes coating removable rather than scrape-off.
For solvent-based paints the atmosphere in the duct can be within a flammable range. That is an equipment and area classification question for the plant safety engineer, and the fan answer follows it: non-sparking construction, drive arrangement outside the airstream where required, and motors to the specified class. We will not sell a fan into a classified area on the basis of a catalogue.
Wheel choice
Backward inclined for its cleanable geometry and tolerance of coating; a shrouded radial wheel where the load is heavy. Double inlet where the booth is wide and the volume is large.
Data we need
Booth data for a selection
Booth exhaust data
- Booth face velocity and opening area, which give the volume
- Filter type, clean and final differential pressure
- Duct length, bends and discharge arrangement
- Paint system: waterborne or solventborne, and the solvent
- Area classification decision from the plant safety engineer
- Existing motor, supply and starter type
- Cleaning interval and the method used today
- Noise limit at the nearest boundary or workstation
