Aeration and Water Treatment Blower Duty
Aeration, backwash and effluent duty: head from diffuser depth, density corrections, turndown and corrosion.
The duty
Depth is pressure, and oxygen transfer is the real deliverable
On an activated sludge basin the fan does not fight ductwork, it fights the water column. Diffuser submergence converts almost directly to pressure – about one atmosphere per 10.3 m of water – plus the diffuser loss, the header and pipeline losses and the freeboard above the surface. A six metre tank on fine bubble diffusers is a high pressure duty compared with the same airflow through an open duct.
The other trap is the rating basis. Aeration equipment is normally quoted on standard air, so an order written against actual cubic metres per hour at 35 C and 300 m altitude delivers less oxygen than the designer intended. Density correction is not optional on this duty.
Turndown matters more than peak
Oxygen demand follows the load. A fan sized for winter peak and run at part load on fixed speed wastes energy; speed control changes absorbed power as the cube of speed, which is why drives belong on this duty.
Data we need
Send these numbers
Aeration data
- Airflow per basin and total plant flow
- Diffuser type, submergence depth and diffuser pressure drop
- Header and pipeline losses, plus freeboard
- Site altitude and summer and winter water and air temperatures
- Turndown range required and the control method
- Continuous or intermittent duty and the number of units
- Noise limits, since blowers sit near clarifiers and staff
- Whether the gas is air, biogas or something corrosive
